The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) said as many as 248 party workers passed away, ‘shocked’ by the demise of party highest leader M Karunanidhi. The party even announced a compensation of Rs two lakh each to their families.
After coming to know about the health deterioration of M Karunanidhi who was in critical condition and after his death, 248 party workers died, a decision adopted at the party general council meeting said.
Expressing sympathy for their deaths, DMK said,”this general council resolves to provide a solatium of Rs 2 lakh each totalling Rs 4.96 crore to their families.” DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi drew his last breath on August 7 in a private hospital owing to a prolonged illness.

Before stepping into politic, he worked in the Tamil film industry as a screenwriter. He is known for the knack of writing stories, plays, novels, and a multiple-volume memoir and has also made contributions to Tamil literature.
