Who was Mukesh Chandrakar?

A 29-year-old journalist from Bijapur, Chhattisgarh. Mukesh worked for a local TV channel. Mukesh used to report on Naxalite attacks, encounters, and other issues in the Bastar region. In 2021, Maoists kidnapped some CRPF jawans. Mukesh played an important role in the release of these jawans. Also, he used to run a YouTube channel, which had more than 1.59 lakh subscribers.

What’s the whole matter?

Mukesh Chandrakar was making his mark in the field of journalism when he suddenly disappeared on January 1, 2025. The family informed the police, and police action revealed that Mukesh Chandrakar had been murdered. The body was found in a septic tank on the contractor’s property. The tank had recently been sealed with concrete, raising suspicion of murder.

Police registered a murder case

Police immediately registered a murder case. Mukesh’s elder brother, Yukesh Chandrakar, is also a journalist. He told the police that Mukesh had recently reported on irregularities in a road construction project. Mukesh was receiving threats after this report. His reporting exposed alleged irregularities in a £11.8 million road project in the Bastar region, a stronghold of Maoist insurgency, following which the government ordered an inquiry.

According to the postmortem report, the journalist was brutally murdered; he had five broken ribs, 15 fractures in the head, a broken neck, and his heart was removed. Police have arrested Mukesh’s accused, Suresh Chandrakar, along with three other accused, Ritesh Chandrakar, Dinesh Chandrakar, and Mahendra Ramteke.

Arrested from Hyderabad

After the murder of journalist Mukesh Chandrakar was revealed, the SIT investigating the case arrested the absconding prime accused Suresh Chandrakar from Hyderabad on 6 January. Since 3 January, he has been absconding. On 6 January, the SIT arrested him from Hyderabad and brought him to Bijapur.
