The appointment of the new Prime Minister in Sri Lanka has not only created a stir in politics there, but her life story has also become a topic of discussion. Harini, who took over as the 16th Prime Minister, is 54 years old and was a student of Delhi University. This is a matter of pride for the Indian education system.
According to sources, in 1988–89, the situation in Sri Lanka became violent due to the Tamil movement. During this time, schools and colleges were closed, and keeping oneself safe was also a challenging task. At such a time, Harini Amarasooriya came to India to pursue further studies.
In 1990, Harini Jayasuriya was enrolled in the prestigious Hindu College of Delhi University. She studied sociology from 1991 to 1994. Popular filmmaker Imtiaz Ali and journalist Arnab Goswami were her batchmates. After this, she did her PhD in social anthropology from the University of Edinburgh. Harini Amarasuriya has also worked as a lecturer at the University of Sri Lanka during her education, where she did extensive research and teaching on sociology and humanities subjects.
On the selection of Harini Amarasuriya as the Prime Minister, Hindu College Principal Anju Srivastava expressed pride in the college’s distinguished alumnus. She said, “It is an honor to know that a Hindu alumnus has become the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. Hindu College has a long tradition of student government, and we elect a Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition every year. Harini’s appointment is another milestone in the historic history of our college.”
Harini Amarasuriya’s journey from a student at Delhi University to becoming Sri Lanka’s 16th Prime Minister is an inspiring story of determination and resilience. Known for her academic brilliance and leadership qualities, Harini has always been a strong advocate for education and social reform. Today, her story is celebrated as a symbol of the profound influence of Indian education on global leadership.
