External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said in a recent interview that the two great diplomats of the world were Lord Hanuman and Shri Krishna. While explaining diplomacy, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of the great epics, Mahabharata and Ramayana. He portrayed the great characters of these epics as unique ambassadors of the world and praised their diplomatic skills.
Addressing an event in Pune for the launch of his book “The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World,” translated into Marathi as ‘The India Way,’ he praised Lord Krishna and Hanuman as exceptional diplomats. Emphasizing Hanuman’s extraordinary actions, he highlighted how Hanuman surpassed traditional diplomacy, reaching Sita and even setting Lanka ablaze.
In his words, Lord Krishna and Lord Hanuman were the “greatest diplomats”. While explaining strategic patience, he gave the example of Lord Krishna forgiving Shishupala several times. Krishna promised that he would forgive 100 mistakes of Shishupala, but at the end of the 100th, he would kill him. This demonstrates the importance of one of the most important qualities of a good decision-maker.
S. Jaishankar currently holds the position of India’s Minister of External Affairs, having previously served as the country’s foreign secretary from January 2015 to January 2018. Throughout his tenure, he played a pivotal role in diplomatic engagements with ASEAN, China, and the United States. Jaishankar is an alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, holding a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. He further pursued his academic journey at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where he earned MA, M.Phil., and PhD degrees in international relations, specializing in nuclear diplomacy.
