Muslim women have been subjected to cruelty in the name of religion for years and this practice just does not seem to come to an end any time soon. Be it ‘triple talaq’ or ‘nikah halala’, it is always the women who is subjected to humiliation and injustice while men enjoy their empowered status.
In a shocking incident that came to light, a media house, India Today, exposed how Maulvis charge women anywhere up to 25 thousand to 1 lakh rupees for night stands or in Islamic terms ‘nikah halala’.
For those of you who don’t know what this term means, here’s an explanation in simple language:
Nikah halala is common in certain south-Asian Muslim communities in the United Kingdom, Pakistan, and India. The practice that requires a divorced Muslim woman to marry again, consummate the marriage, and then seek divorce if she wishes to reunite with her former husband.
Now, after a man has divorced his wife, she is no longer ‘halal’ or lawful to her. So, if he wishes to reconcile with her, his now ex-wife will have to perform a nikah halala. However, some Islamic scholars in India have turned this practice into a trade.

Such incidents are the reason why there must be a uniform civil code so that Islamic laws that treat women in such horrendous ways can be abolished.
