Hyderabad is in the spotlight recently for launching pollution-free electric autos for garbage collection. Andhra Pradesh government is very specific about deploying e-autos for waste disposal, which would replace diesel-run garbage collection trucks. Previously, the government took the initiative to adopt pollution-free electric bikes in Vishakhapatnam, becoming the first state to do so.
“We want Hyderabad to become free from all types of pollution. Electric autos will be easy to track, so that we can monitor that there is no discrepancy in the garbage collected and the garbage transported to recycling units. Further, these vehicles will reduce the carbon footprint in the city as these will not emit hazardous smoke,” said B Janardhan Reddy, Municipal Commissioner, GHMC.
“After the recent announcement by the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao that electric vehicles will be introduced to replace diesel trucks presently used for garbage collection in GHMC, the corporation has ordered electric autos from Hyderabad based Gayam Motor Works (GMW),” a GHMC release said.
The release claimed that each diesel auto replaced will cut down about 35 tonnes of carbon emissions over five years. “This fleet of electric vehicles communicates real-time status. GHMC’s waste management system can now be monitored from a single location by our officials.”
“This will improve per vehicle productivity, reduce non- compliance, eliminate manual tracking for monitoring and escalation. Communities benefit from optimised operations, beautified public spaces & reduced carbon footprint,” GHMC Commissioner, B Janardhan Reddy said as per the inputs from PTI.
As per the reports, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has committed to plant over 40 lakh saplings this year. “Planting of more trees will ensure less pollution in the city. Increasing green cover in urban spaces is a challenging task, but we have urged residents to cooperate with us and plant saplings. People have showed interest in the project, and within the next few months, we will start handing out the saplings to the NGOs and RWAs,” said Mr Reddy.
