What did you do when you were six years old? Probably playing video or PC games, assembling toy bricks, solving 3×3 Rubik’s cube, doing homework? We often see that little kids get scared of small ants. Many of them get afraid of some negative TV characters while watching cartoon shows. But here is this six-year-old kid Mamata Dalai who toyed with a giant crocodile in an attempt to rescue her sister.
Yes, you read it right. This is no filmy script. It happened in real life. Thanks to Mamata Dalai’s parents who educated Mamata to be bold and brave in crucial situations of life. Saving one’s life in an emergency situation is a challenging task but to be able to do it as a six-year-old kid deserves a big round of applause.
Hailing from Bankual village in Kendrapara district of Odisha, Mamata Dalai, Student of Class III has been the talk of the town for saving her elder sister from the jaws of the crocodile. For her immense courage, she was conferred with a Bravery award this year by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier in April last year, Mamata and her elder sister Asanti had gone to take a bath in a pond near their house. Little did they know that they would come across a five-foot-long crocodile that was wandering off a nearby river which then moved into the village pond.
All of a sudden, the crocodile leaping into hunting its prey as it attacked the seven-year-old Asanti. The crocodile caught hold of Asanti’s right hand and was trying to pull her into the pond. The poor little Asanti was crying for help as her life was in danger.
Mamata who saw her elder sister in that dangerous situation, didn’t hesitate to rescue her as she held tight onto her sister’s left hand with full might with an aim to drag her away from the jaws of the crocodile. Mamata came up with an alternative tactic of throwing a utensil on the crocodile that saw the predator losing its grip on Asanti and slip into the pond.
The ferocious predator usually goes beyond limits and does everything to satisfy hunger. Things would have a real more different had Mamata Dalai was not in the right spot at the right time. The forest officials of the Bhitarkanika National Park took ideal measures to nab the crocodile. Mamata became the youngest one to receive the bravery award from PM Modi.
In an interaction with Modi and her future to the United News of India, “The Prime Minister pulled my ear and loved me and told to sit near to him and said ‘you are a brave girl and wished a bright future’. I will serve the people by becoming a doctor in future.”
