In shocking news, five judges of the Supreme Court of India have been affected by swine flu which is caused by the H1N1 virus.
The deadly virus had originated in pigs and then passed to humans. The swine flu is said to have come from Mexico in April 2009.
“Five judges were kept in home isolation as soon as the infection came to light and, of these, three judges have already resumed their duty; two continue to be under home isolation/observation and are recovering. The court rooms and residences are being sanitised,” a release issued by the Ministry said.
Chief Justice of India Sharad A. Bobde held a meeting with Supreme Court Bar Association president and senior advocate Dushyant Dave to discuss urgent measures to prevent the spread of infection among judges, advocates, staff and litigants.
Mr. Dave later stated that the virus has affected some judges in the past few days. The CJI also confirmed that notification would soon be issued to arrange vaccination in one or two days. As per Dave, H1N1 vaccination will cost around Rs 1,200. Apart from this, over 35 people have also been tested positive for the virus in Meerut. The number of virus affected cases have risen since January.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), in the early stages, H1N1 virus symptoms include fever, chills and sore throat. It quickly spreads from person to person, either by touching the affected person or inhaling. The Health Ministry said, “Prophylactic treatment was given to all who have come in contact with them including their family members”.
