India on high alert after Kerala student tested positive for novel coronavirus

Everyone is aware of the fact that Coronavirus is not confined to China but also spreading to other countries quickly. So far, the virus has affected over 4000 people and claimed over 170 lives in China

Amid worldwide panic over the dangerous virus, the first positive case of novel coronavirus (nCoV) has come out. As per the Union ministry of health, a student from Kerala has got novel coronavirus. The student has returned to India from China where he was studying at Wuhan University and now he has tested positive for the virus. He is currently being monitored.

“One positive case of Novel Coronavirus patient, of a student studying at Wuhan University, has been reported in Kerala,” the Health Ministry said in a statement. The patient, a woman, is in isolation in the hospital, said the statement, adding that she is “stable and is being closely monitored”.

One of 20 samples had tested positive for Coronavirus, said Kerala Health Minister KK Shailaja. The outcome of three more samples is yet to be released. “The patient had returned from Wuhan and is now kept in isolation at General Hospital in Thrissur. She is stable,” she said, urging people traveling from China to report to the health department. The medical student was admitted into the isolation ward after she “self-reported” a minor throat infection.

WHERE DID THE VIRUS COME FROM?

The virus is believed to have originated late last year in a food market in the Chinese city of Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife. Health experts think it may have originated in bats and then passed to humans, possibly via another animal species.

The health ministry requested people who frequently travel to China to go through medical tests at the nearest health facility. If they experienced any symptoms such as fever, cough or breathing trouble. Around 30,000 passengers have been screened at various airports across the country.
