Senior BJP leader JP Nadda has taken over as BJP president replacing Amit Shah. Nadda has been elected unopposed as the 11th BJP National president. Mr Nadda is believed to be the third most powerful leader in the party after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
A big responsibility has been handed over to him as Amit Shah is now the Home Minister of India. Mr Nadda’s name was proposed by ex-chiefs and parliamentary board members Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh and Nitin Gadkari.
“Amit Shah’s stint as BJP chief was unparalleled. He took the party to new heights,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
On the one hand, there are many achievements made by Amit Shah, on the other hand, there are many challenges before JP Nadda, it seems to be hard for BJP. Nadda started his career as National Minister of ABVP in 1989 and now he will have to carry forward Amit Shah’s legacy in BJP. The number of members of the party was around 10 crores in July 2014 when Amit Shah took over as BJP president. Under Shah’s leadership, the BJP became the world’s largest political organisation with 18 crore members in just five years.
Nadda is taking charge as new BJP president at a time when the situation is not the same, challenges have become worse than before. To take forward the line of success drawn by Amit Shah is going to be the biggest challenge for JP Nadda. Under Shah’s leadership, the BJP grew from strength to strength winning back-to-back elections in 16 states. For the first time, the BJP government came to power in Maharashtra, Assam, Haryana, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. Over the past year, the party has suffered reverses in states like Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan.
In the next 3 years, Legislative Assembly elections will be held in 14 states, out of which 6 states do not have a BJP government and Nadda has to ensure victory for BJP in these states.
Recently, BJP lost Jharkhand and could not form the government in Maharashtra. Some of its allies are not happy with the party’s aggressive approach. In such a situation, Nadda will be leading the party and will have a big responsibility on his shoulder to cope up with difficult situations.
