Women have as much right as men to go to a party, go out alone, go on a date and drink, but they are afraid to go out alone at night due to rape incidents happen day in and day out. Rape in India is said to be the fourth most common crime and the number of rape cases has increased in the country.
Recently, an 18-year-old girl was brutally raped and burned to death. The incident took place on 5 January when some locals found the body of the victim under a tunnel which is said to be nearly 90 percent burnt. Victim’s family members reported the matter to the police but the identity of the victim was not revealed publicly as per the Supreme Court’s order.
Now, the leaders and workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday carried out a protest rally in Kolkata against the “rising crime against women” and “worsening law and order situation” in the state.
During the rally, protesters were seen holding up posters with the name of the 18-year-old Kumarganj rape and murder victim, who was raped and burned to death on January 5.
They took out a rally against the order of the Supreme Court, which had directed that the identity of the victims of rape and sexual assault should not be disclosed.
“The police did not allow us to protest so we had to approach the high court. We are protesting with the order of the high court and will continue it until the victim gets justice,” BJP Mahila Morcha president Locket Chatterjee said.
Locket Chatterjee said that the entire country expressed grief over the death of the Hyderabad veterinarian rape and murder victim and protested against the crime, but there is no outburst in West Bengal.
Referring to the deaths during an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest in Mangaluru, another BJP leader at the protest said, “It is unfortunate that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) sends delegation to other states but when a minor girl was raped and murder in West Bengal, no TMC leader has met the victims’ family.”
