In a strange turn of events, an elderly supporter of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tamil Nadu passed away after he was allegedly assaulted by a suspected supporter of the DMK-Congress alliance on Saturday.
The 75-year-old man named Govindarajan has been campaigning for Narendra Modi for the Lok Sabha 2019 elections. In fact, he also wore photos of Modi and Jayalalithaa on his shirt and usually would roam around the state to campaign.
Police said, adding that they arrested Gopinath as he assaulted the elderly man while the latter was seeking votes for the AIADMK-BJP alliance at Orthanadu late on Saturday.
In uncontrolled anger, Gopinath assaulted Govindarajan who was also a big fan of AIADMK founder late M G Ramachandran.
The man suddenly collapsed after being thrashed badly. He passed away hours later around 9 pm.
Gopinath was detained on Sunday and was produced before the court which remanded him to judicial custody, police added in a statement.
Cops said Gopinath was identified to be a supporter of DMK-Congress alliance supporter.
