Meet Prashanti Singh- The first Basketball player to achieve Padma award

Among the recipients of the Padma Shri award, Prashanti Singh’s name has been mentioned on the list and thanks to Indian government for making this announcement on the eve of the country’s 70th Republic Day (26th January). It has been said that Prashanti Singh was one of 7 sports athletes who were among 94 people listed as Padma Shri recipients.

Prashanti Singh, a women’s basketball player by trait has contributed a lot for the country with as many as 23 medals to her credit in National Championships, Federation Cups, and National Games in India. In fact, she even has a film based on her life named “Boskey Basketball Banaras”.

‘Padma Shri’ is the highest honour conferred with Prashanti and this isn’t the only award she has received. In the year 2017, she was conferred with the Arjuna Award by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India. Moreover, she was also awarded the prestigious Rani Laxmi Bai Bravery Award 2016-17 in the field of sports by the Government of Uttar Pradesh.

She is known for the knack of playing as the shooting guard for the side. She is the first woman to represent India in one Commonwealth Games (2006) and two Asian Games (2010, 2014).

For your information, Padma Shri is the fourth-highest honour awarded to a civilian followed by the likes of Bharat Ratna, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan. The ‘Padma’ awards were first introduced in 1954 and were presented to Indian citizens to recognize their contribution in arts, education, industry, science, sports, literature, medicine, social service, and public affairs.
