Scholar Salil Gewali writes an open letter to PM Modi on flood of obscene material on social media and the internet

To,
Shri Narendra Damodardas Modi-ji
The Honourable Prime Minister
Government of India, New Delhi

Subject: Urgent need for regulation of the “flood of obscene material on social media and the internet” to safeguard the moral and cultural values of our youth.

(Due to the absence of regulation, countless senior students/youths are increasingly being victimized, as well as producing and uploading vulgar and inappropriate content on social media, with no fear of consequences or awareness of the long-term harm it may cause to themselves and society.)

Respected Prime Minister,

I write to Your Excellency with the utmost respect and deep concern regarding a pressing issue that is silently eroding the moral and cultural fabric of our society — the unchecked availability and dissemination of obscene and explicit content on social media platforms and the wider internet.

Today, children and adolescents, many of whom access the internet for educational purposes, are increasingly “exposed to inappropriate material” that is not only damaging to their mental, character, and emotional well-being but also threatens to undermine the values of modesty, respect, and family integrity that our culture holds dear.

Students or youth are creating explicit reels and videos and uploading them to social media platforms

Social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp…. have unfortunately become breeding grounds for content that is vulgar, sexually suggestive, and morally degrading. What is most alarming is that even school/college students are also now actively involved in creating, sharing, and consuming such content on social media platforms in the form of reels, videos, and images, which attracts millions of views.

Moreover, many television channels, digital streaming platforms and so-called “influencers/models” are broadcasting serials, films, and comedies filled with sexually suggestive content and double-entendre dialogues, with no regard for their adverse impact on impressionable minds. The normalization of such material significantly contributes to moral confusion and behavioral issues among today’s youth.

Before promoting digital learning among children, the government should have exercised foresight and implemented a ban on pornographic and immoral content that is easily accessed and shared across the internet and social media platforms via android mobile phones.

There have been numerous disturbing incidents in the country — some reported, many unreported — involving boys as young as 12 to 15 years old engaging in immoral and outrageous behaviour toward their female classmates.

It raises a crucial question: Where is our younger generation headed towards, and what does the future hold for them and the nation when the minds of future citizens are being corrupted?

In view of the rapid rise in “moral decline among the youth”, it is our earnest hope that Your Excellency will take serious note of this issue and direct all the concerned MINISTRIES and authorities to take the necessary action in the larger interest of the younger generation and the nation.

Lastly, we would like to bring to Your Excellency’s attention an eye-opening article that sheds light on how our children are being corrupted and how society is experiencing moral degeneration. Link: https://davidvance.net/the-moral-bankruptcy-of-entertainment-celebrities/
