I kept a small Ganesha idol with me in Space: Sunita Williams

Indian-American astronaut Sunita Williams, who is of Indian origin, was stuck in space for nine months but has returned to Earth. In this space journey, she took the idol of Lord Ganesha with her. While stuck in the International Space Station for such a long time, Sunita Williams also received the support of Ganesha ji’s spiritual power. Sunita Williams embraced tradition even in space.

This is not the first time Sunita Williams has taken an idol or religious sign during her space trip, even before she took Shivji’s painting and Om during the space trip. Even though astronaut Sunita Williams grew up in America, her faith is in Hinduism. According to reports, Sunita Williams’ husband, Michael J Williams, also follows Hindu customs.

According to sources, Sunita Williams has traveled in space thrice and has taken the idol and religious sign every time. Sunita Williams has reported that religious books during the space mission help to maintain attention and clarity. Also, these sacred texts help them find peace and purpose in the secluded space.

This was Sunita Williams’s third space trip. She left for ISS for eight days with her partner, Buch Wilmore, in June 2024, but the mission lasted for more than 9 months due to technical disturbances. This time, she took Ganesha’s idol with her. She also shared a picture of it.

The picture of Kumbh was taken from Kajan. In a conversation with a shared media outlet, Sunita Williams’ Kajan Falguni Pandya also shared the story of Kumbh. She said that she had come to India to attend the Kumbh Mela in February. During this, she sent a picture of Kumbh Mela to Sunita. Then Sunita shared a picture of Kumbh Mela with her with Space. Not only this, she also celebrated Diwali in space itself. Sunita Williams also performed Diwali rituals in space, lighting a symbolic lamp and praying. Her deep spiritual connection provides her strength and peace even in challenging space missions.
