BCCI Secretary responds after Congress Leader Shama Mohamed Calls Rohit Sharma ‘Fat’

Recently, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed sparked controversy with her remarks about Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. In a now-deleted social media post, she referred to Sharma as “fat for a sportsperson” and called him “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had.”

Her comments quickly drew criticism from fans, sports analysts, and members of the cricketing community. Facing backlash, Mohamed later clarified that her comments were not intended as body-shaming but rather as a general observation on athlete fitness.

The controversy escalated further when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to address the matter publicly. Speaking to NDTV, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed his disappointment over Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s remarks about Rohit Sharma, calling them “unfortunate.”

“It is very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such a trivial comment,” Saikia stated.

He emphasized that such remarks, especially during a crucial ICC tournament, could negatively impact the morale of both the player and the team. Saikia underscored the dedication of the Indian squad, stating that all players were giving their best performance, and unnecessary criticism could undermine their confidence.

“The team is in the middle of a crucial tournament. It may have a demoralizing effect on the team and players,” he added.

She also deleted her post and expressed admiration for Rohit Sharma’s achievements. Despite the controversy, Hitman Rohit Sharma, the cricketing genius remained focused on his game and nothing else. He led India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy.

His stellar performance in the final against New Zealand, where he scored a match-winning 76, silenced critics and reaffirmed his status as a top-class leader. Overall, Rohit Sharma won two ICC trophies as a captain and it was a dream come true moment for him.

In 2023, just ahead of the ICC WTC final against Australia, he expressed that he would like to win 1-2 trophies as a captain. Rightly so, he achieved it. Interestingly, following India’s triumph, Mohamed acknowledged Sharma’s leadership and praised his contribution to the team’s success.
