Anand Mahindra’s optimistic reply over competition with Elon Musk’s Tesla in India grabs everyone’s attention

Tesla, the American electric vehicle (EV) giant owned by Elon Musk, is reportedly set to enter the Indian market, with a planned launch in April. The company is targeting key metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai for its initial showrooms.

However, Tesla’s entry might not be a smooth ride, as it is expected to face strong competition from Indian auto powerhouse Mahindra Group.

Anand Mahindra's optimistic reply over competition with Elon Musk's Tesla in India grabs everyone's attention

Mahindra Group’s chairman, Anand Mahindra, has expressed confidence in his company’s ability to compete with Tesla. His response came after a user on social media platform X asked how Mahindra would handle competition if Tesla set foot in India.

Anand Mahindra’s response quickly gained attention and appreciation. He recalled how similar concerns were raised when India opened its economy in 1991, allowing foreign automakers like Daewoo, Ford, and Hyundai to enter the market.

Despite the increased competition, Mahindra not only survived but thrived by adapting to new technologies and market demands. “We have been asked similar questions ever since the opening up of the Indian economy in 1991. How will you compete against Tata, Maruti, and all MNCs? But we’re still around,” Mahindra remarked.

He further emphasized Mahindra’s long-term vision, stating that the company is determined to remain relevant even a century from now. “And working like maniacs to still be around & relevant even a century from now. With you cheering us on, we will make that happen,” he added.

Interestingly, Anand Mahindra also reminded people of a 2018 post where he had acknowledged Tesla’s challenges at the time. This reference highlighted his long-standing interest in Tesla’s journey and how competition fuels innovation.

Tesla’s India strategy currently revolves around imports rather than local manufacturing. The company is expected to bring in EVs from its Berlin Gigafactory. While India recently lowered the basic customs duty on imported cars over $40,000 from 125% to 70%, vehicles priced below this mark still face a hefty 70% import tariff.

The road ahead will be exciting as Tesla and Mahindra gear up for competition in India’s fast-growing EV market. With Tesla’s cutting-edge technology and Mahindra’s deep-rooted understanding of the Indian consumer, the battle for supremacy in India’s EV space is just beginning.
