Harnaaz Sandhu, the name that brought the prestigious Miss Universe crown back to India after 21 years, is a beacon of grace and resilience. Hailing from Punjab, this 21-year-old dazzled the world with her poise, intellect, and beauty when she claimed the title at the Miss Universe 2021 pageant in Eilat, Israel, edging out competitors from Paraguay and South Africa.
Harnaaz’s journey to global fame began at a young age. Her foray into the glamorous world saw her clinch several coveted titles, including Times Fresh Face Miss Chandigarh 2017, Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018, Femina Miss India Punjab 2019, and LIVA Miss Diva Universe 2021.
Each milestone shaped her into the confident and compassionate woman who captured the world’s attention on the Miss Universe stage.
Despite her accolades, Harnaaz faced a wave of criticism for her weight gain post-Miss Universe. She turned showstopper at the Lakme Fashion Week 2022 for designer duo Shivan and Narresh, showcasing their Fresconian Series.
Draped in a striking bright orange velvet gown with a plunging neckline and a dramatic train, Harnaaz commanded attention on the runway. However, the internet was quick to react, with many trolling her appearance.
Social media was abuzz with contrasting opinions. While some criticized her, others stood by her, emphasizing that beauty transcends physical attributes. Harnaaz, unfazed by the negativity, responded with dignity. Sharing her journey on Instagram, she reminded her followers of the importance of self-love and acceptance.
“I Don’t Care About Body Shaming”
At a press conference in Chandigarh, dressed elegantly in a Punjabi suit with Phulkari, Harnaaz addressed the issue head-on. She revealed her struggle with celiac disease, an allergy to gluten, which impacts her diet and health. “I used to be told to be thin, but people don’t know I’m allergic to flour. I don’t care about body shaming,” she asserted.
