Youth asks tax relief for the middle class, Nirmala Sitharaman responds

Recently, a user on social media asked Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for tax relief for the middle class. A Union Minister responded by highlighting the government’s responsiveness and expressing her appreciation for his concerns.

Tushar Sharma said on Twitter, “Your efforts and contributions to this country are deeply appreciated, and we have immense respect for you. I humbly request that you provide some relief for the middle class. I understand that many challenges are involved, but this is a heartfelt request.”

Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister, appreciated the user’s concerns, calling the current government one that “listens to the voice of the people and is attentive to it.” Speaking to the user, she said, “Your input is valuable.”

India’s middle class bears income tax on earnings and GST on expenses. According to government figures for 2023, just 2.24 crore people, or 1.6% of the population, will be required to pay taxes in 2022–2023. The direct tax system, which consists of corporate tax and income tax, has increased in India. The fact that direct tax revenues have surpassed indirect tax revenues is a positive development.

According to sources, retail inflation in the country was 6.21 percent last month, crossing the Reserve Bank of India’s upper tolerance level. Data from the National Statistical Office showed that food inflation rose to 10.87% last month from 9.24% in September.

Many middle-class families feel the burden of rising inflation and the growing tax burden. Calls for government support are getting louder as people hope for some financial relief soon. India’s middle class is grappling with the dual impact of inflation and taxes, urging the government for immediate and meaningful financial relief measures.
