He has wanted to become an actor since childhood.
Growing up in Kandivali, Mumbai, Tanmay Vekaria’s childhood was shaped by his father’s involvement in Gujarati theater. Despite belonging to a middle-class family, Tanmay was drawn to the world of acting from a young age. His father’s influence and exposure to theater shows ignited his passion for the performing arts. Tanmay’s determination to pursue acting as a career was fueled by his frequent visits to theater performances and interactions with actors. Little did he know the challenges and hard work that awaited him on his journey to becoming an actor.
Despite being an average student in school and lacking interest in academics, Tanmay Vekaria’s determination to pursue acting never wavered. After graduating in 1999, he set out to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor. Tanmay invested in preparing his portfolio and actively sought opportunities in the industry. However, despite his efforts, two years went by without any success in securing acting roles. This period of struggle was particularly challenging for Tanmay as his family relied solely on his father’s income to sustain themselves. Tanmay faced the pressure of needing to contribute financially to his household amidst his aspirations for an acting career.
He got a job worth Rs. 700.
Facing the need for financial stability, Tanmay had to make a difficult decision. His maternal uncle, a chartered accountant, offered him a job paying Rs 700 and provided him with a local pass for transportation. At this juncture in his life, Tanmay felt compelled to prioritize practicality over his passion for acting. He resolved to pursue a steady job and temporarily set aside his aspirations in the field of acting.
Despite participating in numerous plays, Tanmay faced disappointment as none of them propelled him forward in his acting career. He encountered a play by Sanjay Cheel that didn’t yield the desired success either. However, as the saying goes, every person encounters a turning point in their life. Similarly, Tanmay experienced such a pivotal moment.
Tanmay landed a role in a play directed by Dilip Joshi, known for portraying Jethalal in “Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah.” Though Tanmay’s role in the play was minor, it enjoyed a prolonged run, and Tanmay gained recognition in the Gujarati theater scene. Following this success, he also collaborated with Disha Vakani, popularly known as Daya Bhabhi, in a significant role. This play proved to be a breakthrough moment for Tanmay, bringing him considerable success.
Tanmay is stuck between television and theater.
After establishing himself in theater, Tanmay ventured into television. Collaborating with Asit Kumar Modi, he secured a small role in a television show. Meanwhile, Tanmay’s theater commitments were also flourishing. He began landing roles in prominent shows like “Yes Boss” and “Money Ben.com,” leading to a hectic schedule with back-to-back performances. Tanmay would perform in Mumbai during the day and fly to Gujarat for evening shows, maintaining this routine for four months. Eventually, the demands became overwhelming, prompting Tanmay to step back from theater.
In July 2010, Tanmay made the decision to close down his theater activities entirely. However, around the same time, he encountered a setback in his television career as well, as he stopped receiving offers for shows. This marked a significant phase of depression for Tanmay, leading him to contemplate seeking alternative employment. However, fate had other plans in store for him. Tanmay learned about casting opportunities for “Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah” and promptly reached out to the producer. Impressed by his potential, the producer invited Tanmay for a shoot.

Tanmay’s breakthrough came with “Taarak Mehta ka Ooltah Chashmah,” where he initially played minor roles. However, his talent caught the attention of the producers, who offered him the role of Bagha after an audition. Tanmay embraced the character wholeheartedly and infused it with his own creativity, winning over the audience with his portrayal. Bagha became an integral part of the show, and Tanmay’s hard work and dedication have been instrumental in his success.
