Shah Rukh Khan, popularly known as the ‘Badshah’ of Bollywood, has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood. The king of Bollywood Shahrukh Khan keeps attracting controversies from all sides. Due to his celebrity status, religion, and behaviour, SRK has become one of the most controversial actors in B-Town. Here are some of the major controversies that King Khan has faced in his public life.
1. Shah Rukh went for a fetal gender test
Following the news of Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan opting for surrogacy for their third child, speculations were rife that the celeb couple went for a gender determination test. Which is illegal in India. On Tuesday (June 18), the Maharashtra government ordered an inquiry into the allegations.
2. Hafiz Saeed invited Shahrukh to Pakistan
In an interview with Outlook Turning Points, Shah Rukh Khan said, “I sometimes unknowingly become the target of political leaders who choose to make me a symbol of everything they think is wrong about Muslims in India. This is wrong and treasonous… I have been accused of owing allegiance to my neighbouring nation rather than my own country…” Reacting to his statements, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed told Shah Rukh Khan that he should move to Pakistan if he feels ‘unsafe’ in India, and assured that the Bollywood actor will “enjoy all the freedom he wants in this country.”
3. Shiv Sena threatens to stop the release of Shahrukh Khan starrer My Name is Khan
In 2010, Shah Rukh Khan angered Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray by stating that he was under pressure not to bid for Pakistani players for his team Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. He also said that Pakistanis are the best T20 players in the world. Thackeray then threatened to stall the release of his upcoming film My Name is Khan. However, the entire film fraternity supported Shah Rukh and spoke in his defence. The film was released.
4. Ban on Shah Rukh’s entry into Wankhede Stadium
Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) officials have filed a police complaint against Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for alleged misbehaviour at the Wankhede Stadium. They have also decided to impose a lifetime ban on entering the campus.
“Following the IPL match, MCA secretary Nitin Dalal said he misbehaved with MCA officials, including the association’s president Vilasrao Deshmukh.
5. Shah Rukh-Salman Khan
There was a time when Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan used to call each other brother. But now the enmity between the two has come to the fore. While Salman says, “Shah Rukh Khan and I could never be friends”, Shah Rukh believes that “Salman and I don’t talk, which is absolutely true.” So what went wrong? Things clearly went awry at Katrina Kaif’s birthday celebrations in 2008. It is believed that Shah Rukh made inappropriate comments about Salman’s ex-girlfriend Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, which angered him.
In an interview, King Khan said that Salman became angry because he refused to do a cameo in Main Aur Mrs. Khanna (whereas Salman had agreed to do a guest appearance in Om Shanti Om). Salman said that he never offered him the film, “Shah Rukh was like my brother. During his struggling days, he used to call me Sir, Sir.” In 2011, on Koffee with Karan, SRK publicly apologized to the actor, saying: “If Salman is angry with me, it is 100% my fault.” However, Salman hit back saying that Shahrukh’s apology was for TRP.
6. Shah Rukh-Priyanka Chopra
Family man Shah Rukh Khan is caught in a link-up controversy for the first time in his career. While SRK is maintaining a dignified silence on the issue, PC is not taking it too well.
The fashion star shrugged off a reporter’s questions about her alleged link-up with Shah Rukh, saying with a straight face, “Speaking too loud doesn’t mean I’ll answer your questions. Priyanka denied that Shah Rukh was the one who made her blush at the premiere of Teri Meri Kahaani. He replied, “I never said anything like that.” However, he admitted this in Karan Johar’s talk show Koffee With Karan. Shahid and the filmmaker even teased him with the name Shahrukh. Allegedly because of these rumors, he is not on good terms with his wife Gauri Khan, and his friend Karan Johar.
7. Shah Rukh Khan-Big B, Amar Singh
Shah Rukh Khan reportedly supported the event organizers when Amar Singh objected to the fact that he or his close friend Amitabh Bachchan were not allotted front-row seats at an awards ceremony in 2007.
8. SRK-Gauri Khan
The fact that Gauri Khan is missing from the IPL action is leading to strong talks of trouble in paradise. Although Shahrukh’s team Kolkata Knight Riders is performing well this season, Gauri is not with her husband to cheer and support the team. The Don star was recently spotted at a nightspot in Mumbai with his sister Shenaz and their children Aryan and Suhana without Gauri Khan. Is Shahrukh’s link-up with PC the reason? Who knows!
9. RK-Abhijeet Bhattacharya
Abhijeet Bhattacharya has added another name to the list of Shahrukh Khan’s enemies. The singer recently criticized Shahrukh in an interview, saying that the actor should apologize to him for not giving him due credit in Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om.
When asked by a newspaper to comment on what Abhijeet had said, Shah Rukh quipped, “Isn’t it a coincidence that someone who doesn’t want to work with me becomes famous?”
10. SRK-Airport: Part 1
In August 2009, SRK was detained for nearly two hours at the Newark airport in New Jersey because of his surname.
The actor was visiting the country to attend a South Asian event where he was the guest of honour and was released after Congress MP Rajeev Shukla spoke to the authorities in the US.
