“An elderly couple in Alwar, Rajasthan, welcomed their first child through IVF after 54 years of marriage. Thanks to the IVF technique, many elderly couples, ranging from 70 to 80 years old, have become parents in India and around the world. However, doctors claim that this case is unique to Rajasthan, where a 75-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman became parents through IVF.
IVF is a special technique in which an egg is fertilized with sperm from the male partner outside the woman’s body. Once the fertilized egg is formed, it is implanted in the uterus. The first successful use of this technique was in 1978, and since then, it has been continuously used, fulfilling the desire of many people to become parents.
IVF expert Dr. Pankaj Gupta stated, “Gopichand contacted the fertility center through his relatives about 1.5 years ago. Chandravati and Gopi Singh reside in a village near the Haryana border, close to Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan. The couple also visited several metropolitan cities for treatment but in vain. Gopichand has served in the Indian Army, and he was injured in his leg during the Bangladesh war. He is extremely happy to become a father and is enthusiastic about his child.”
Nine months ago, Chandravati finally conceives a baby after her third IVF attempt. While she was happy, there was also fear due to her advancing age. But finally, on Monday, she gave birth to a healthy child. Both the mother and baby are doing fine, and the baby’s weight is approximately three and a half kilograms,” added the doctor.
Recently, a law was passed by the parliament, effective from June 2022, which prohibits any IVF infertility center from providing treatment to women and men above 50 years of age. However, the couple was fortunate as the woman became pregnant before the law came into effect. Coincidentally, the doctor who performed the caesarean section on Chandravati, Dr. Colonel Reena Yadav, is also a military officer.”
