Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is one of the popular female celebrities in the Bollywood film industry. She predominantly works in Hindi movies. In fact, she won a National Film Award and a Filmfare Award. From 2012 to 2016, she was featured in Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list depending on her income and popularity.
She is the daughter of actor Anil Kapoor. Sonam kick-started her career as an assistant director on filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2005 highly acclaimed drama Black. However, her career didn’t take off properly as her movies turned out to be failures at the box office.
The 2013 box office hit “Raanjhanaa” had marked a turning point in Kapoor’s career. Thus it drew praises from every nook and corner of the Bollywood fraternity. She drew plaudits for her performance and also won the Best Actress nominations at several award ceremonies.
Notably, she had the biggest commercial successes with supporting roles in the biopics including the likes of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) and Sanju (2018). Moreover, she had a leading role in the romance Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) which ranks among the highest-grossing Bollywood movies.
For the unversed, she won the National Film Award – Special Mention and a Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Neerja Bhanot in the 2016 biographical thriller Neerja. She then starred in the 2018 female buddy film Veere Di Wedding, both of which rank among the highest-grossing female-led Hindi films.
At times, she has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Her bold or straightforward opinions drew flak from across quarters. On Koffee With Karan, she said, “If you’re not good-looking, they think you are a good actor. Just because you look ordinary and you talk loud doesn’t mean you’re a good actor.“
In an interview with a leading newspaper, Kangana hit back at Sonam Kapoor, by saying “Sonam has said that people who act well are ugly, I have heard. So, do I get the crown of being the ugliest person because after watching Queen, people have been telling me that I act really well. So according to Sonam, I am the ugliest actor in Bollywood today. Well, I accept that with all the gratitude and humility.”
