Women are trying their hand in almost every field. When opportunity knocks the door, they have always shown willingness to take the chances. We have seen them as teachers, doctors, software engineers, advocates but seeing as a tractor driver is something very rare these days.
Hailing from Ghaziabad, 79-year-old Ramkumari has become an icon of women empowerment. She will be remembered as the first woman Tractor Driver in India, an occupation which only men are familiar with.
Needless to say, Ramkumari proved that gender is not a big deal. People are really shell-shocked to see a woman in forties doing this job for she is believed to be the only qualified truck driver in the country.
Ramkumari, a resident of Dhindar village of Muradnagar in Ghaziabad, does farming and also drives tractors on her own fields.
Ramkumari herself works in the fields and also drives a tractor. Ramkumari says that she has been driving tractors for about 35 years.
Ramkumari’s husband used to do job. In such a situation, there was no one to look after the fields. Ramkumari then decided to take care of fields and learned to drive a tractor.
Ramkumari says that in the beginning, she hit the tractor against the wall, causing a huge loss. but my courage was still intact. I tried again and finally I learned to drive a tractor.
Now, giving a tough competition to men, this lady tractor driver has started to plough fields for farming.
