Sanjay Leela Bansali’s film Padmaavat became controversial during production. There were allegations from groups such as the Shri Rajput Karni Sena, a Rajput caste organisation, claiming that the film depicts a romantic connection between Queen Padmavati of Chittor and Sultan Alauddin Khilji of Delhi.
Due to this, the Rajputs got enraged that their Rajput Queen would be portrayed in that obscene manner. Subsequently, the Karni Sena made threats of violence, reportedly threatening to burn down theatres if the film is released.
Padmavati director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was attacked by members of the Karni Sena. Following this, late Sushant Singh Rajput had dropped his surname to condemn the attack. He had tweeted, “We would suffer till the time we’re obsessed with our surnames. If you’re that courageous, give us your first name to acknowledge.#padmavati”
“I decided to drop ‘Rajput’ from my name to make my stance on this issue very clear. I want to say these self-proclaimed representatives of the community do not represent everyone with that surname. If they have a problem with something there are other ways to express it but definitely not violence and that too on a mere speculation,” he had later said in an interview. He had barely four years of experience in the film industry at the time.
“Violence is not bravery . You react on a speculation because of fear. There are ways to put up your point but that requires intelligence,” Sushant wrote in another tweet.
