As per a ‘Crime in India’ in 2018 report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), as many as 91 rapes were reported daily across India in 2018. In fact, crimes against women and girls have been increasing in recent years. As per the NCRB report of 2018, nearly 3.78 lakh cases of crime against women were reported across India.
In 2018, Maharashtra recorded a whopping number of 35,497 crimes committed against women. Next on the list are West Bengal (30,394), Madhya Pradesh (28,942), and Rajasthan (27,866).
The report goes on to say that a total of 3,59,849 cases were reported against women in the year 2017. In 2016, 3.38 lakh cases of crime were registered against women, while 3.2 lakh cases were registered in the year 2015. As far as the state-wise data is concerned, Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state in India has once again topped the list with a staggering 56,011 cases of crime against women. Maharashtra follows next on the list with 31,979 cases and West Bengal at 30,002.
The data also clearly exposed that many as rapists in 93.7% of the cases were people known to the rape victim. In a total of 18,059 cases the rapists were friends, employers, neighbours or other known people, while in 11,945 cases they were known to be online friends.
In a shocking incident, a 62-year-old woman was murdered for trying to save her granddaughter from a would-be rapist who tried to sexually assault her. The incident took place from Berhampore in Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
The police say that the 15-year-old girl was living with her grandmother as her parents passed away a long ago. At night time, a man tried to break into their house only to attack the minor girl.
The grandmother then attempted to lock him inside the house and seek for assistance. The annoyed accused strangled the woman to death. The accused who tried to escape caught by locals as they handed him over to the police. Locals say that the 37-year-old accused was known to the victim’s family and tried to assault the girl earlier too.
