India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has suffered a major setback in the Delhi assembly election 2020 while Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stormed to power in Delhi for the third consecutive time by winning 62 of 70 seats.
Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari is believed to be the main reason for losing assembly election in Delhi as he failed to attract Purvanchali voters. Moreover, the Sikh Community did not agree with the decision of appointing Manoj Tiwari as the Chief of Delhi BJP. As we know that the Punjabis and the Purvanchalis make around 70 per cent of about 1.5 crores Delhi voters. So, the Punjabi voters and the Purvanchal voters were the deciding factors in the Delhi election. Despite a massive campaign held by senior leaders of the Party, BJP lost the capital. Manoj Tiwari might have taken Punjab and Purvanchal voters for granted.
The BJP thought that Manoj Tiwari would swing the Purvanchali votes in its favour but he failed to attract even Purvanchali votes. Thinking that Manoj Tiwari had a huge fan following among Purvanchali people, He was appointed as the Delhi BJP chief, but senior party leaders were not happy with the decision.
The BJP also announced an alliance with the Janata Dal-United of Nitish Kumar, the Bihar chief minister, for the Delhi assembly election with an objective of getting support from the Purvanchali voters. However, The JDU does not have a significant presence in Delhi but the BJP expects a positive spillover effect.
It is said that the Punjabis and the Purvanchalis are the deciding factors in Delhi, so Punjabi and Purvanchali voters are believed to have played the deciding role in the recent Delhi assembly election. In this election, Punjabis and Purvanchalis voted for the AAP party instead of the BJP party. The share of Punjabi voters is said to be 35% which had gone to the AAP party.
This is a big setback for the BJP. Now, it will remain to be seen whether the BJP will oust Bhojpuri star Manoj Tiwari from Delhi or give him one more chance. The early trends showed that the BJP could secure around 25 seats, but an unexpected result came for the BJP. however, the BJP party improved in this election with 38.51 per cent votes. The Congress party, which had ruled Delhi for 15 years, could not even open its account in the Delhi assembly election.
The Aam Aadmi Party, on the other hand, made a great strategy to give tickets to candidates who have good tuning with Purvanchalis with the hope that the Purvanchali voters would bring the party back to power for the third term.
After losing the Delhi assembly election, the BJP will think about what was the reason behind losing the election. Manoj Tiwari may be thrown out of the party. It will also be wrong to say that the BJP won all 7 seats in Delhi during the Lok Sabha election 2019 when Manoj Tiwari was president of Delhi BJP party.
Seeing the fact, BJP managed to win all 7 seats in Delhi Lok Sabha election just because of PM Modi as he was the main face for the BJP party and the entire country was chanting “Modi, Modi, Modi hai to mumkin hai, Abki baar fir Modi sarkar”. So it was Modi who led the BJP to victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. As for the 2020 Delhi assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has already conceded defeat. Meanwhile, Manoj Tiwari congratulated Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on his election victory. “Thank you to the voters in Delhi. For their hard work. I respect the mandate of the people. Congratulations to Arvind Kejriwal,” he tweeted, minutes after Kejriwal’s victory speech.
