After the US killed General Soleimani ‘second most powerful person in Iran’, tensions between the US and Iran rose to their highest point. It is a well-known fact that the relations between Iran and America have been complex and largely hostile for long. Thereafter, Iran launched over a dozen ballistic missiles on US forces in Iraq early Wednesday morning in retaliation and claimed it killed 80 Americans in strike.
After the strike, Iran urged India to play the role of a mediator between the US and Iran amid growing tensions between the two countries. However, India urged the US and Iran to exercise “restraint” in order to avoid destabilising the region. “We have noted that a senior Iranian leader has been killed by the US. The increase in tension has alarmed the world. Peace, stability and security in this region are of utmost importance to India”, said the MEA statement.
Iran will welcome any peace initiative from India for de-escalating tensions in west Asia following the assassination of General Qasem Soleimani, Iranian ambassador Ali Chegeni has said. His remarks came hours after Iran fired more than a dozen missile against two US military bases in Iraq in retaliation. Tehran said it was a “slap in the face” of America.
“India usually plays a very good role in (maintaining) peace in the world. India belongs to this region. We welcome all initiatives from all countries, especially India as a good friend for us, to not allow escalation (of tensions),” Chegeni told reporters after a condolence meeting for Soleimani at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi.
“We are not for war, we are looking for peace and prosperity for everybody in this region. We welcome any Indian initiative or any project that can help peace and prosperity in this world,” he said.
India is a great country and being a prominent leader PM Modi can play a positive and effective role between the two nations in order to de-escalate the tension. Iran’s invitation shows India’s influence on global matters. According to Iran, India is an important player in global affairs. India has good relations with the US as well as Iran. India is ready to help de-escalation of tensions if the two sides of the conflict demand for India’s mediation.
