A woman in Karnataka’s Shimoga alleged that she was given ‘triple talaq’ by her husband who lives in Dubai through a WhatsApp voice message.
“My husband, Mustafa, gave me Triple Talaq through a voice recording message on Whatsapp. But I don’t accept this divorce. I have registered a case and I seek justice. Police said that they can’t do anything as my husband stays in Dubai,” the woman identified as Ayesha was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
She added that they were married for 21 years.
“We were happily married for the past 21 years. Initially, I could not have a baby but this did not bother him as we adopted a girl child who is now 16-years-old,” she said.
Ayesha also alleged that even after she lodged a complaint because her husband’s family was “too big” the case was settled out of the police station.
“The police are not ready to help; they say that since my husband is out of the country, they are unable to help. I want to stay with my husband and daughter. I am not even well-educated that I could work and earn for my family. He is not giving us financial support, which is a big problem for my daughter’s education,” she said.
The Modi government had also passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill which made instant triple talaq a punishable offence.
The law which has been pending for years drew flak and controversies with many Muslim organizations claiming that it was a breach of Muslim Personal Law.
Those who backed the law, however, argued that it was really necessary to protect women who ‘often get abandoned without any rights’ after they were given divorce, sometimes for strange reasons.
