Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan avoided a question on the reported imprisonment of as many as 2 million Muslims in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, frankly saying he “didn’t know much” about what’s really going on.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Imran Khan was asked about his take on the mass confinement centres where many of China’s Muslim-majority Uyghurs have been sent. Activists and former detainees say the camps are designed to eliminate Uyghur culture and Muslim religious practices.

“Frankly, I don’t know much about that,” said Khan. When asked again, he said the Muslim world was running through “its worst phase” but protested on Beijing’s suppression in Xinjiang. “If I had enough knowledge I would speak about it. It is not so much in the papers,” he said. “I can tell you one thing, the Chinese have been a breath of fresh air for us … They have been extremely helpful to us,” he said
China might be an all-weather ally to Pakistan but the manner in which they are treating Muslims in their country is horrible. United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Wednesday hit out at China for its “shameful hypocrisy” towards Muslims. He said that China is leaving no stone unturned to torture and abuse more than millions of Muslims at home and at the same time, it is protecting Islamic terror groups.
The global countries are opposed to China’s beliefs and ideologies. China was in the receiving end when it repeatedly voted against declaring Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar, who claimed responsibility for the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, a global terrorist.
Today, Beijing is under heavy criticism for the way it treats Uighur minority and there is no equality spread in the nation. The north-western Xinjiang region is home to more than 10 million members of the Uyghur Muslim minority group and several reports have suggested that the Uyghur community is being discriminated against 2 million people who have been forced into “political camps for indoctrination” in the region. But Beijing has claimed that the reports of torture were false.
