In last 25 years, nearly 100 kashmiri women have registered rape cases with the police against the Indian army. It is hard to comment on such a sensitive issue as all information we have is solely from other sources. Our sources, of course, are the victims, police and army. We hardly have information from other sources. Many of cases against the army are still going on in the court.
There is a popular saying in English- “if there is smoke, there must be fire”. If there are allegations against the army, we can’t rule out the possibility of rape incidents carried out by the army. However, on the basis medical proofs and some other evidences, many rape cases against the army were found fake by the court. Now the question is as to why fake charges were filed against the army? We will try to analyse the scenario in the following paragraphs.
India deployed a large number of soldiers in Kashmir in 1965 after Pakistan attacked the made an unsuccessful attempt to capture Kashmir which caused deaths of many soldiers. Surprisingly, there was probably no rape case against the army in the valley before the 1990s. Notably, this is the same decade in which kashmiri Hindus faced the nightmare.
They began to leave in much greater numbers in the 1990s during the eruption of militancy, following persecution and threats by radical Islamists and militants. The events of 19 January 1990 were particularly vicious. On that day, mosques in northern Kashmir issued declarations that the Kashmiri Hindus were Kafirs and that the males had to leave Kashmir, convert to Islam or be killed. Those who chose the first of these were told to leave their women behind. The Kashmiri Muslims were instructed to identify Hindu homes so they could be systematically targeted for conversion or killing.
Supporting militants and terrorists is not the story of only the 90s. Some of kashmiri locals often support these terrorists openly. Recently local Kashmiris attacked the army when it was involved in an ongoing encounter with a notorious and dangerous LeT terrorist commando. Which was covered by some national newspapers.
